Does Black Really Make You Look Slimmer?

I came across a discussion on Quora which asked why some people wear black all the time and what it means. I love the colour black but I don’t wear it all the time, and yes it means a lot to me! Like most people I love the colour even more because it makes one look slimmer. When I was bigger, I would stay off white and most bright colours, wearing mostly black or darker clothing from head to toe in order to appear as slim as possible. But after losing the weight, I began to really enjoy wearing the awesome colour and appreciate how effortlessly fashionable it is. It can make you look as though you’ve put a lot of effort to look chic, when all it is is a simple blazer and a pair of old trousers that you just plucked out of your wardrobe, like I did in the picture below.

Many people on Quora had their own take of why they love black, I especially loved one user, Madeleine Gallay’s take on the colour. She said:

Possibly they simply believe that black is the new black.

Always chic, easy and it’s just a beautiful preference.

There are some that wear only black until it’s warm and then wear only white.

One of the purest aesthetic choices.

Another user Talia Evelyn said:

I sometimes wear all black. I do this[:]

1.) Because I have a young face and I’m short, so people think I’m twelve. This is especially a problem when flirting with boys… Wearing all black, particularly with ripped jeans or hoodies, makes me look older and people take me more seriously.

2.) I have a habit of attracting lots of attention with my personality and loud voice, so I like to avoid wearing bright colors so as to not stand out.

3.) Wearing all black accentuates body shape

4.) I like the color and feel I look good in it.

5.) A lot of my favorite shirts come in black.

6.) It annoys my mother, who feels black isn’t feminine enough and wants me to wear frilly pink dresses.

7.) A lot of my clothes are hand-me-downs from my dad and stepmom, and the ones in best conditions are black

8.) Wearing black automatically makes you appear more well dressed. Even a black T-shirt and black jeans looks more fashionable than a… say… Red T-shirt with blue jeans. Black can be worn to almost any occasion.

9.) If most of my clothes are black, most of my clothes match, so I can wear more combinations of clothes (especially useful when half your clothes are dirty)

10.) I have blond hair, so people automatically assume I listen to Taylor Swift and Katy Perry and talk about boys all the time. If I’m wearing a Linkin Park shirt and black jeans, they respect me as an individual and not a stereotype.

My Tips for Wearing Black the Right Way

1. The colour will always look great but choosing the right fabric and texture is key.

2. Accessorise! But don’t over-do it, even a single piece of jewellery can make your outfit pop.

3. Black effortlessly makes you look slimmer. Take advantage of this great feature that black offers by choosing clothing with a good fit. Shapeless clothing in black can be a waste of a good figure flattering opportunity, especially if you work so hard to maintain that beautiful body of yours.

4. Did you know that black clothing is incredibly flexible? You can easily wear a good black outfit it to work and play on the same day, by simply accessorising to suit the occasion.

Whatever is your reason for wearing black, keep it going. It’s an effortlessly chic colour indeed.
